“Karl is a treasure. He teaches me more in one afternoon fishing than a hundred therapy sessions in an office. Karl has helped me see my life in a new way. It’s like the best therapy, but you don’t know you’re in therapy.” -Student
Karl is widely regarded as a pioneer and enduring leader in the field of Recreational Therapy, bringing more than four decades of experience and influence to his work with youth. Over the course of his career, he has impacted the lives of thousands of children and families—many of whom credit him with changing, and in some cases saving, the trajectory of their lives.
What sets Karl apart is a rare and powerful gift: the ability to meet young people exactly where they are, deeply understanding and validating their pain, while skillfully guiding them toward a healthier, more purposeful way of living. Through experiential and outdoor-based interventions, he helps students not only gain insight, but live it—translating growth into action in ways that are lasting and meaningful.
Karl’s work is rooted in a profound respect for the healing power of nature and the wisdom found in Native American culture, both of which inform his approach and philosophy. His presence is steady, grounded, and deeply authentic—qualities that have made him a trusted mentor to both students and professionals alike.
His four decades of service are more than a measure of time—they represent a lifetime of unwavering dedication to helping young people find hope, resilience, and a path forward. Karl’s legacy is not only seen in the countless lives he has touched, but in the enduring impact of the work he continues to do every day.
